Panama shaken by magnitude 7.6 earthquake as tsunami warnings are issued

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck southern Panama on Friday, shaking buildings in Panama City and prompting tsunami warnings along nearby coasts. The United States Geological Survey placed the epicentre about 10 kilometres southwest of Pitaloza Arriba, near the country's southern tip, at a depth of roughly 10 kilometres. Residents left towers and gathered in the streets while authorities checked bridges, ports and power lines. Reuters reported no deaths, and no major structural collapse was confirmed in the first hours. Tsunami alerts were issued for parts of the Pacific coast and later reviewed. Panama sits on several active fault systems, and the quake was felt far from the epicentre, including in neighbouring countries.

White House suspends Microsoft and eight IT firms from a green card program

The Trump administration has suspended Microsoft, Adobe and six large IT companies from a program that lets employers sponsor skilled foreign workers for permanent residency, citing alleged fraud. Vice President JD Vance announced the move at the White House, and Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling named Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL and Capgemini as affected. The freeze does not touch current H-1B holders but could block a common route to a green card. Vance also said nine universities merit investigation over their use of the J-1 exchange visa program, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT and Caltech. The Labor Department's inspector general said subpoenas have been served.

Thieves use a winery's own forklifts to steal 30,000 bottles in Italy's biggest wine heist

Thieves stole about 30,000 bottles of premium wine from a Marchesi Antinori storage facility in Tuscany, worth an estimated 5 million euros, in what the company calls the largest wine theft in Italian history. At least seven masked people disabled alarms and cameras at the warehouse in Cortona before loading two trucks. The most striking detail is the equipment: the gang used the winery's own forklifts to move thousands of cases. The haul included Tignanello, Solaia and Guado al Tasso reds, which often sell for 175 to 580 euros a bottle. Chief executive Renzo Cotarella called the group highly trained and said it may have hit other Italian wineries. Police and Carabinieri are investigating.

TSMC weighs a second US campus in Dallas as chip investment passes $2 trillion

TSMC is reported to be considering a second US campus, this time in Dallas, according to UDN and Reuters reports citing unnamed sources. The company has already pledged $265 billion for American manufacturing, and Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs says it has approved $44 billion of TSMC investment in the United States so far. The first Arizona fab began high-volume production in 2024, with three more under construction and plans for more than nine facilities in the state. Announced US private-sector manufacturing commitments have now passed $2.09 trillion, led by semiconductor projects. AI data centres are driving demand, and advanced packaging capacity remains tight.

Humanoid robots start training in a German factory gym

Hexagon Robotics' AEON humanoid is now training inside Schaeffler's Humanoid Gym in Germany, part of an agreement to deploy at least 1,000 units across Schaeffler's global production network by 2032. Most industrial humanoid deployments are still counted in single digits, so the target marks a shift from demonstration to production planning. AEON is built for multi-purpose work: pick and place, moving boxes, inspecting parts and capturing 3D scans of plant floors. It relies on sensor fusion, spatial intelligence and physical AI, and Schaeffler supplies high-precision strain wave and planetary gear actuators for the platform, drawing on its bearing and power-transmission engineering.

White Sox and Guardians meet in a winner-take-all ALDS Game 5

The Cleveland Guardians host the Chicago White Sox in Game 5 of the American League Division Series, with the series tied 2-2. Cleveland forced the decider with a six-run sixth inning in Game 4. Losing good gut bacteria during inflammation may trigger new food sensitivities

New research suggests that losing beneficial gut bacteria during inflammation may open the door to new food sensitivities in people with inflammatory bowel disease. IBD, which includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, involves chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, and many patients report that certain foods make symptoms worse. The gut hosts trillions of bacteria that help break down fibre, train the immune system and keep the intestinal lining intact. When inflammation flares, the mix of species shifts, helpful strains decline and the immune system may start reacting to proteins it previously ignored. The authors say more studies are needed before the finding changes clinical advice.

Isaias weakens after Florida landfall, but the flood threat is not over

Hurricane Isaias came ashore on the Florida Panhandle as a Category 2 storm and weakened to a post-tropical cyclone by Saturday, yet officials warn that flooding remains the main danger. The storm tied the record for the latest first hurricane of an Atlantic season, a mark set in 1905, and it brought winds, storm surge and heavy rain to parts of Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. At least two deaths have been linked to the storm, and thousands of customers lost power. Pensacola's airport closed to commercial flights before landfall. Forecasters expect the remnants to drift north and east, dumping more rain on already soaked ground.
