Houthis hit Riyadh airport again and warn Saudi transit hubs will stay targets

For a second day, a Houthi strike hit Riyadh's international airport on Oct 11, one day after an attack the Yemeni group claimed killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300, forcing authorities to suspend flights. Saudi officials described the Oct 10 strike as the deadliest on Saudi soil in more than a decade. The Iran-backed group claimed several attacks within 24 hours and said the kingdom's transit hubs are "a theatre of operations for our forces". President Donald Trump said Washington may join Saudi retaliatory strikes, telling reporters the United States "moves very quickly". The escalation lands as Riyadh opens a major energy conference and pushes its plan to become a hub for business travel and tourism.

Trump announces an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, Zelensky waits for details

President Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an "energy ceasefire" effective immediately, announcing it on Truth Social on Oct 11 without setting out terms. Moscow did not comment, and Volodymyr Zelensky said he was still waiting for details from Washington. The Ukrainian president, who spoke with NATO's Mark Rutte and Canada's Mark Carney, said only Russia is responsible for the war and did not commit to halting strikes on refineries. The announcement followed Trump's warning a day earlier that Zelensky had "better damn well stop" attacking Russian oil plants and his suggestion that Ukraine hold new elections. Diesel near $6.28 a gallon and Republican midterm worries sit behind the push. On Oct 9 the Treasury allowed Russian diesel imports until April 2027.

Energy ceasefire takes the war premium out of diesel and crude prices

Traders began pricing out the war-risk premium in crude and diesel after President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on Oct 11. The premium has been the largest supply-side fear in fuel markets, so a pause in strikes on refineries and pipelines removes its immediate justification. US diesel averaged $6.28 a gallon on Oct 11, down from $6.53 on Sept 22 but still near double the level of a year ago. The move comes with US stocks firm: the S&P 500 closed at 7,823.60, the Dow at 51,740.80 and the Nasdaq 100 at 30,928.20. September inflation data arrive on Oct 14, with economists split on whether the Federal Reserve hikes again this month.

AI chip debt passes $489 billion as credit markets start to push back

Companies racing to fund AI chips have sold about $489 billion of related bonds so far in 2026, already more than in all of 2025, according to credit strategist Amanda Lynam. Broadcom is arranging more than $50 billion to finance OpenAI's custom accelerator, while SpaceX is in talks over a $40 billion package to buy Nvidia processors. Credit markets are responding: Broadcom's five-year credit default swap spread has more than tripled from about 41 basis points to roughly 136, and Oracle's has reached a record near 261. Oracle's shares are down more than 40% since June 2 and Broadcom's about 25%, while Nvidia's stock has held up, trading at $237.47.

Spinach nanoparticles and red light help failing rat hearts pump again

Researchers in China have used tiny structures taken from spinach leaves to feed struggling heart muscle. The team, led by Union Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, extracted thylakoid membranes from spinach and packaged them into nanoparticles coated with membranes from heart muscle cells. Injected into the hearts of rats with induced heart failure and combined with red light, the particles improved pumping function and reduced tissue damage. The findings appear in the journal Small. The work is early: the treatment was delivered by direct heart injection, and no one has shown that enough light can reach a human heart.

US measles cases pass 4,000 for the first time since 2000

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 4,080 confirmed measles cases in the United States as of Oct 8, up 193 in a week and the highest annual count since the country declared measles eliminated in 2000. Cases were reported by 47 jurisdictions, with 42 new outbreaks this year and 96% of infections linked to outbreaks. About 95% of patients were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status, roughly one in ten was hospitalised, and officials in Pennsylvania have confirmed five measles-associated deaths. Public health experts expect the US to lose its elimination status. In 2025, the full-year total was 2,289 cases.

Isaias leaves two dead and a long cleanup along the Gulf Coast

Hurricane Isaias killed two people with falling trees in Florida and Alabama after making landfall near Destin, Florida, on the night of Oct 9 as a Category 2 storm with 105 mph winds. The storm had briefly reached Category 3 strength with 120 mph winds a day earlier, prompting evacuations across the northern Gulf Coast and states of emergency in Florida and Alabama. Hundreds of thousands of customers lost power, and crews reported downed trees on houses, blocked roads and damaged beach communities. Isaias weakened to a post-tropical cyclone but kept bringing flash flood and tornado risks to the southeast.
