OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman made an unannounced weekend visit to South Korea, meeting about 50 Samsung executives in Yongin and reportedly holding talks with SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won. The trips centre on memory chips, where Samsung and SK Hynix hold roughly 63% of global DRAM revenue and about 83% of high-bandwidth memory. Samsung's 2027 HBM output and SK Hynix's 2029 output are already sold out, and Micron has warned the shortage could run into 2028. No new agreements on pricing or investment were announced. New observations with the Very Large Array and the ALMA telescope show that Betelgeuse's outer atmosphere has largely returned to normal after the Great Dimming of late 2019 and early 2020, when the red supergiant faded to its faintest level in more than a century. The radio maps also show the star's disc changing shape in step with the orbit of Siwarha, a small companion that passes through the star's extended atmosphere about twice the stellar radius from its centre. The work, led by Lynn Matthews and published in the Astronomical Journal, offers the first spatially resolved look at how a close companion disturbs a supergiant's gas.

New US research presented to the American Heart Association found that intensive care admissions for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest rose steeply with outdoor heat. Compared with days reaching 85F, admissions were 45% higher at 91F and 102% higher at 98F. The analysis pooled data from 10 US health systems and accounted for humidity and air pollution. Women and older adults were affected most. Survival and neurological recovery among patients who reached hospital did not appear worse during heat waves, but the surge in critically ill arrivals puts pressure on limited ICU beds, equipment and staff.

Researchers estimate that 50,391 people died from heat in 854 European urban areas during the summer of 2026, the highest toll since 2000 in the areas studied. About two-thirds of the deaths are attributed to human-induced climate change. The figure is almost double the roughly 29,000 estimated for summer 2022 and the 28,000 for 2003. The analysis, led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Imperial College London, covered cities in 27 EU countries plus the UK, Norway and Switzerland. One heat wave from 17 June to 1 July, when temperatures ran 5.3C above normal, accounted for about a third of the deaths.
