White Sox and Guardians meet in a winner-take-all ALDS Game 5

A series that refuses to separate

The Cleveland Guardians host the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night in Game 5 of the American League Division Series. The series is tied 2-2 after Cleveland won Game 4 with a six-run sixth inning at Rate Field.

The clubs have now played 17 times in 2026, and the margin is tiny. Chicago leads the season series 9-8, but Cleveland has outscored the White Sox by a total of five runs across those games. Before Game 4 turned into a blowout, the gap was a single run.

Ramirez finds his swing again

Jose Ramirez has carried the Guardians. His two-run homer off Jordan Hicks gave Cleveland the lead in Game 4 and continued a late-season rebound. Ramirez had surgery in June to repair a fractured left hamate bone and admits he is still not fully healthy, but he has looked like himself again at the plate.

Cleveland's bullpen is the open question. Gavin Williams, who struck out an AL-best 248 batters in the regular season, threw 18 pitches in relief to close Game 4 and is lined up to start Game 5. Manager Stephen Vogt said the staff would work through the plan, and he likes the pressure: he has asked players whether they prefer to make 50,000 people go crazy or shut them up.

Both sides carry the weight

Sean Burke is expected to start for Chicago. Shortstop Colson Montgomery said the team has to move on. "Flush these last two games. It's out of our control now," he said. "All we can control is how we show up."

Cleveland may also change its outfield. Angel Martinez is 0-for-15 with eight strikeouts in the series, and Daniel Schneemann, Petey Halpin and David Fry are options. History offers no clear edge: of the 18 previous teams that fell behind 2-0 and forced a Game 5, 10 went on to win the series. Home teams have gone 70-68 in winner-take-all playoff games. First pitch is 8 p.m. ET on TBS and HBO Max.
