President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he hoped the war against Iran was close to ending, in the clearest signal yet that Washington wants to wind down a conflict now in its seventh month. The comments came as Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement traded long-range attacks across the Arabian Peninsula. A Houthi spokesman said Saudi aircraft carried out as many as 450 air strikes on Yemen this week, while the group fired drones and missiles at the Saudi Red Sea oil port of Yanbu and an airbase at Khamis Mushait. Trump is expected to meet leaders of six Gulf states as Washington tries to turn military pressure into a ceasefire. Oil prices have climbed during the fighting.

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the European Union would face very serious tariffs, or a halt to large parts of transatlantic trade, if it moves ahead with a plan to bring Canada in as an associate member. Trump called Canada a terrible trade partner and described the idea as laughable. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said the EU is opening the door for Canada to become the bloc's first associate member, a category that does not exist in current EU treaties and would need ratification by every member state. Canadian officials say no formal offer is on the table, and EU diplomats describe the plan as a political signal.

IMTS 2026, the largest manufacturing technology show in the Western Hemisphere, opened Monday at McCormick Place in Chicago with 1,788 exhibiting companies, including 400 first-time exhibitors. The show covers 1.17 million square feet and runs through September 19, with attendance on pace to top 90,000 visitors from all 50 U.S. states and 113 countries. Organizers estimate a $250 million economic impact for Chicago and Illinois. Exhibitors are focused on robotic machining, cobots and AI-driven production, betting that automation will close a gap: surveys show fewer than 40 percent of U.S. job shops use any automation at all.

Huawei will launch two new artificial intelligence chips in 2027, rotating chairman David Wang said on Thursday at a company event in Shanghai. The 960DT is planned for the first quarter of 2027, followed by the Ascend 960PR in the third quarter. Wang said Huawei's UnifiedBus interconnect technology will be a key link in its next generation of large AI systems, letting many chips work together as one machine. Huawei says it has shipped more than 1,000 of its large AI systems to more than 370 customers. U.S. export controls have pushed Chinese firms to build domestic alternatives to Nvidia hardware.

A study led by the Southwest Research Institute offers the first evidence that liquid nitrogen has recently flowed on Pluto's surface. Researchers used images from NASA's New Horizons spacecraft to examine dark, narrow features along the northern edge of Sputnik Planitia, the huge nitrogen glacier that forms the western lobe of Pluto's heart-shaped region. The features resemble patterns on Greenland's ice sheet where liquid water darkens snow and ice. The team suggests nitrogen melts near the base of the glacier and rises through cracks. The paper was published in The Planetary Science Journal.

The Dodgers clinched their 14th consecutive postseason berth on Monday, beating the Reds 4-1 behind seven scoreless innings from Tarik Skubal and home runs by Kyle Tucker and Teoscar Hernandez. The streak ties Atlanta's major league record set from 1991 to 2005. The Yankees also clinched and activated Aaron Judge from the 60-day injured list, though Judge later left a game with lower leg tightness. Los Angeles and New York still have seeding to settle in the final two weeks. The Dodgers are chasing the first World Series three-peat since the Yankees won three in a row from 1998 to 2000.

Eating-disorder specialists are calling for screening before patients start GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, warning that appetite suppression and delayed gastric emptying can harm people with restrictive eating patterns. Guidance from the National Eating Disorders Association says the drugs can be harmful when inadequately monitored, when prescribed by clinicians without eating-disorder expertise, or when weight loss is driven by weight stigma. Clinicians writing on the topic say GLP-1s should not be used in active restrictive eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or ARFID, and should be used cautiously in bulimia and binge-eating disorder. A 2026 JAMA Psychiatry study flagged misuse of the drugs to sustain rapid restriction.

Residents and environmental groups in San Jose are organizing against a wave of proposed data center projects that city officials have courted to position the area as a hub for AI infrastructure. About 20 data centers already operate in the city, and more than 100 dot Silicon Valley. City officials estimate each new facility could generate $3 million to $6 million a year in tax revenue for police, fire, libraries, roads and parks. Opponents say too little is known about power and water use and whether the benefits will be shared. The Data Center Coalition, whose members include Google, Meta, OpenAI and Anthropic, warns that bills targeting data centers could push investment to other states.
