Researchers may have discovered new extinct life form in ancient rocks

A team of geologists and paleontologists has discovered microscopic structures in 1.2-billion-year-old rock samples that may represent an extinct form of life not previously documented.

The structures, found in shale deposits in Western Australia, measure 5-20 micrometers across and display complex internal organization not typical of mineral formations.

If confirmed through additional analysis, the discovery could expand understanding of early Earth biodiversity.
