GLP-1 drugs show cancer prevention potential
GLP-1 receptor agonists, already prescribed for type 2 diabetes and weight loss, have been linked to a 50% or greater reduction in the risk of four types of cancer, according to a new study published this week. The findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting these drugs have wide-ranging health benefits. Researchers at leading medical institutions analyzed patient data and found reduced incidence of obesity-related cancers among those taking the medications.
FDA proposes ban on bulk compounding
The US Food and Drug Administration has proposed banning the bulk compounding of semaglutide and tirzepatide, the active ingredients in Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. The move targets compounding pharmacies that produce cheaper, unapproved versions of these blockbuster drugs. The FDA cited safety concerns, but critics argue the ban could limit access for patients who cannot afford name-brand versions.
Glucosamine linked to faster dementia progression
A new study has linked the common pain supplement glucosamine to faster cognitive decline in patients with dementia. The research found that individuals taking glucosamine showed accelerated progression of dementia symptoms compared to those not taking the supplement. Separately, new oral GLP-1 drugs have been shown to lower blood sugar levels by 7% in type 2 diabetes patients.
