A large real-world study has linked semaglutide, the drug sold as Ozempic and Wegovy, to nearly 40% fewer asthma attacks. The analysis also found about 20% fewer flare-ups of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Semaglutide belongs to the GLP-1 class, which was developed for type 2 diabetes and later approved for weight loss. Demand has pushed the drugs into wide use, and researchers have been testing whether the benefits extend past blood sugar and body weight.
What the study found
The work drew on health records from a large patient population rather than a controlled trial. People taking semaglutide had fewer severe respiratory events, including asthma attacks that required care, than similar patients who were not taking the drug.
The reductions held after researchers accounted for weight change and other treatments, according to the report. The size of the drop, close to 40%, is large enough that researchers say it deserves follow-up in randomised trials.
Why the lungs may benefit
GLP-1 drugs act on receptors involved in appetite and blood sugar, but they also appear to dampen inflammation. Chronic airway diseases such as asthma and COPD are driven partly by inflammation, so a drug that quiets it could reduce attacks.
Weight loss is the other likely channel. Extra body fat presses on the chest and adds to the work of breathing. Losing weight often improves symptoms, and earlier studies of obesity surgery found similar respiratory gains.
Neither explanation rules out the other, and both could be operating at once.
What doctors caution
Observational studies can show an association but not prove that the drug caused the improvement. People who take semaglutide may also see doctors more often or manage their health differently, which can skew results.
Doctors also flag side effects, including nausea, vomiting and, in rare cases, more serious digestive problems. Patients with respiratory disease should not start or stop treatment based on this study alone.
Researchers say the next step is a randomised trial with lung function and attack rates as the main outcomes.
