Saudi Arabia has closed its 1,200km East-West oil pipeline after drone strikes that Riyadh says were launched from Iraq, removing a route the kingdom used to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. Iraq fired the operations commander in Maysan governorate and opened an investigation after confirming the launch site. Riyadh called the shutdown precautionary and said it would not retaliate for now. Reuters estimates the line had been moving 4% to 5% of global oil supply. The attack lands as Houthi forces in Yemen claim control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, pushing crude above $100 a barrel for the first time since July.

President Donald Trump arrived in Ireland on Saturday for his first state visit since Catherine Connolly became president, meeting Ireland's leaders in Dublin before heading to his Doonbeg golf resort for the final rounds of the Amgen Irish Open. He said relations between the two countries have never been better and told reporters a united Ireland would be 'fantastic'. Large crowds protested in Dublin and a demonstration was planned in Doonbeg, where Irish authorities mounted one of the largest security operations in the state's history. Trump delayed his arrival to stay in the US for the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

US consumer prices rose 3.4% in the 12 months to August and 0.4% from July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, matching forecasts but keeping inflation well above the Federal Reserve's 2% target. Core prices, which exclude food and energy, rose 2.4% on the year. After the report, traders using CME FedWatch put the odds of a quarter-point hike at the September 16 meeting near 90%, up from about 70%. EY-Parthenon switched its call from a hold to a 25 basis point hike that would lift the funds rate to 3.75%-4%. It would be the first increase since 2023.

South Korea's revised espionage law took effect on September 13, broadening the offence from spying for an enemy state to passing national secrets to any foreign country or equivalent organisation. The National Assembly passed the change in February, and it is the first major rewrite of the statute in 73 years. Convictions carry a minimum of three years in prison, with courts able to impose up to 30 years. Police detected a record 33 industrial technology theft cases last year, more than half involving China, with semiconductors the most frequently targeted industry.

Researchers at the Technical University of Denmark have built a nanolaser small enough that thousands could fit on a single microchip, a step toward moving data with light instead of electricity. The device traps photons and electrons in the same microscopic cavity and runs at room temperature. The team estimates that photonic links could cut a computer's energy use by as much as half, by removing resistive heating in circuits, easing data centre cooling and speeding up transfers. The work was published in Science Advances. Powering the laser electrically remains the next hurdle.

Shelton is the first Black American man to reach a US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972, and he is trying to end a US men's title drought that runs back to Andy Roddick in 2003. Cases have been reported in 47 jurisdictions and 38 new outbreaks have been logged this year, with 95% of infections tied to those outbreaks. Public health groups warn the sustained spread puts US elimination status at risk. The Pentagon is again pushing back timelines for cleaning up PFAS contamination at military installations, this time changing schedules at 243 sites. It is the third such delay in a year. Earlier rounds shifted dates at nearly 200 installations, including 15 where the chemicals had reached nearby drinking water, and the New York Times reported some cleanups were postponed by as much as 19 years. A senior defence official said wider investigations and new regulatory standards explain the changes. Lawmakers from both parties have demanded answers.
