Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have mapped roughly 16.5 million individual stars in Messier 82, the Cigar Galaxy, providing the most detailed star census ever taken of a starburst galaxy. Located 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major, M82 is forming stars ten times faster than the Milky Way, making it a natural laboratory for studying extreme star formation.

Unprecedented resolution reveals stellar population

Webb's infrared instruments penetrated the dense dust and gas clouds that previously obscured the galaxy's core from optical telescopes like Hubble. The observations, led by a team from the Space Telescope Science Institute and Tufts University, catalogued stars across a wide range of masses and ages, giving scientists new data on how starburst events evolve over time.

New insights into galactic evolution

The star map will help researchers understand how galaxies like M82 — which is interacting gravitationally with its neighbor Messier 81 — trigger waves of star formation. The data may also shed light on how the early universe's first galaxies produced stars at similarly extreme rates, offering a nearby analog for processes that shaped the cosmos billions of years ago.
