A patch that talks to the brain
A wearable ultrasound patch has boosted REM sleep in a new study, offering a drug-free way to improve sleep quality. The device is worn on the forehead and sends low-intensity ultrasound pulses into the brain. Researchers say the pulses appear to activate sleep-related circuits without causing discomfort.
In the study, participants wore the patch during a full night of sleep. Compared with a control group, they spent measurably more time in REM sleep, the stage associated with dreaming and memory consolidation. Participants also reported waking up feeling more rested.
How it works
