The United States has extended its Ebola travel restrictions to include lawful permanent residents, commonly known as green card holders. Previously, American citizens, nationals, and green card holders were exempt from the 30-day travel ban implemented last month. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the policy change Friday, stating that extending restrictions to permanent residents was necessary to prevent the Ebola virus from entering the country as outbreaks continue in central Africa.
Current Outbreak Situation
The decision comes as the World Health Organization raised the Ebola risk level in the Democratic Republic of Congo to 'very high' while maintaining a 'low' global risk assessment. Health officials report increasing case numbers in eastern Congo, with particular concern about transmission in border regions and among mobile populations. The current outbreak represents the largest since the 2014-2016 West African epidemic that killed more than 11,000 people.

US health authorities emphasize that the travel restrictions represent just one component of a comprehensive Ebola preparedness strategy. Enhanced screening continues at major US airports for travelers from affected regions, healthcare facilities have been conducting readiness drills, and vaccine stockpiles are being maintained. Public health experts note that while the risk of widespread Ebola transmission in the US remains low, vigilance and early detection systems are essential given the virus's high fatality rate and potential for rapid spread in healthcare settings.
