Clean energy dominates new US power capacity despite policy shifts

Clean energy projects accounted for most new power capacity added in the United States last year, according to Energy Department data. The trend continues despite policy changes under the Trump administration.

Solar and wind projects made up 72% of new capacity in 2025, the data shows. Natural gas accounted for most of the remainder.

"Market forces are driving this transition," said energy analyst Sarah Johnson. "Renewables are now cost-competitive with traditional sources in many regions."

The Trump administration has repealed several climate regulations and cut clean energy tax credits. However, state policies and corporate purchasing agreements continue to support renewable development.
