New Tariffs Target Major Trading Partner

Brazil Prepares Retaliation
Brazil's government condemned the proposed tariffs and warned it would retaliate. Brazilian officials also said they would file a complaint with the World Trade Organization.
Brazil's stock market fell sharply on the news, and the Brazilian real weakened against the US dollar. Economists warned that a trade war between the two countries could disrupt supply chains and raise prices for consumers in both nations. Brazil is a major exporter of soybeans, beef, coffee, and iron ore to the United States.
Broader Trade Tensions
The Brazil tariff proposal is the latest in a series of aggressive trade actions by the Trump administration. The Supreme Court struck down many of Trump's previous tariffs in February, limiting the president's ability to unilaterally impose duties. The White House said it was using different legal authorities for the Brazil tariffs and expects them to withstand legal challenges.
The announcement comes amid rising global trade tensions, including ongoing disputes with China, the European Union, and Canada. Analysts said the Brazil tariff could further strain US relations with Latin America, a region where China has been expanding its economic influence.
