Trump threatens tariffs on European goods in trade dispute

Donald Trump said he would impose tariffs on European agricultural products if elected president again. He claims EU farming subsidies give European farmers an unfair advantage in global markets.

The proposed tariffs would target French wine, Italian cheese, and German automobiles. Trump made the comments during a campaign rally in Ohio, where he criticized what he called "unfair trade practices" by European countries.

European officials responded by saying they would take the matter to the World Trade Organization if tariffs were imposed. The EU's trade commissioner called the threats "counterproductive" and warned of potential retaliation.

Trade experts note that Trump's first presidency saw similar tariff threats against Europe, leading to temporary increases in duties on steel and aluminum. The current dispute centers on agricultural subsidies that the US says distort global markets.

European farmers have been protesting against environmental regulations and competition from imports. The EU recently announced additional support for farmers, which Trump says violates trade agreements.
