Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have directly imaged a third planet in the Beta Pictoris system, marking a milestone in exoplanet research and offering an unprecedented look at a young solar system still taking shape.
Third planet joins the family
The newly discovered exoplanet, designated Beta Pictoris d, joins two previously known gas giants orbiting the star Beta Pictoris, located about 63 light-years from Earth. The system is relatively young at roughly 20 million years old, making it a natural laboratory for studying planetary formation in real time. The direct image — captured by Webb's coronagraph instrument, which blocks the star's light to reveal fainter orbiting objects — shows the planet as a distinct point of light.
A rare direct look
Most exoplanets are discovered indirectly through transit photometry or radial velocity measurements. Direct imaging is far more challenging because planets are lost in the glare of their host stars. Beta Pictoris d was detected through this method, allowing scientists to analyze its atmospheric composition by studying the spectrum of light reflected from the planet. Early data suggest the planet is a gas giant several times the mass of Jupiter, with a hot, cloudy atmosphere.
Window into planetary evolution
Because the Beta Pictoris system is still young by astronomical standards, studying its planets offers clues about how our own solar system may have evolved. The system also contains a prominent debris disk of dust and gas — remnants of the planet formation process. Understanding how Beta Pictoris d interacts with this disk could help refine models of planetary migration and orbital evolution.
