Landmark ruling protects 14th Amendment guarantee
The Supreme Court on Tuesday delivered a definitive blow to President Donald Trump's efforts to restrict birthright citizenship, ruling 6-3 that the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to nearly all children born on U.S. soil. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, stated that children born in the United States to parents unlawfully or temporarily present are subject to U.S. jurisdiction and are citizens at birth.
Trump responds, Congress urged to act
President Trump reacted on social media, calling the ruling "too bad for our country" and suggesting Congress could legislate an end to the constitutional protection. Legal experts noted the ruling leaves Trump with few options to reverse the decision. The case centered on Trump's executive order from last year that sought to deny citizenship to children born to undocumented immigrants and those on temporary visas.
A mixed term for the president
The birthright citizenship ruling capped a Supreme Court term that delivered both defeats and victories for Trump. In February, the court invalidated most of Trump's global tariffs in another 6-3 decision. However, it also upheld bans on transgender women in female school sports and expanded presidential power in other areas.
