South Korea exports hit record $120.9 billion on AI chip demand

A single-month record

South Korea's exports jumped 83.5 percent in September from a year earlier to a record $120.9 billion, the first time the country has shipped more than $120 billion of goods in one month. Measured per working day, average daily exports more than doubled, rising 104.9 percent.

The gain was driven by semiconductors, which set their own record as global spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure keeps climbing. Chip shipments now account for close to half of the country's export earnings.

Chips carry the economy

Separate customs data showed South Korea's cumulative 2026 trade surplus had reached $212.99 billion by 10 September, also a record, with total exports for the year at $728.56 billion by that date. Factory surveys in September pointed to a fourth straight month of expansion, helped by both chips and cars.

Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan said annual exports could approach $1 trillion, a level few economies of South Korea's size have reached. He also flagged risks: growing protectionism, tariff pressure and tensions in the Middle East.

What could slow it down

The boom is narrow. Memory and logic chip makers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix account for much of the gain, and their buyers are a small group of cloud and AI companies spending at levels that may not hold. A pause in data centre construction would hit Korean exports quickly.

Supply is another limit. Advanced packaging, high-bandwidth memory and the equipment that builds them are all capacity-constrained, and new fabs take years to come online. That caps how much more Korea can ship even if demand keeps rising.

For now, the trade numbers let the government argue that the AI investment wave is paying off in jobs, tax receipts and retail spending, as chip workers collect large bonuses. Whether that carries into steady growth through 2027 is the open question.
