NASA's Roman Space Telescope passes post-launch systems check in deep space

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has passed its post-launch systems check while operating in deep space, NASA said this week. The observatory launched on August 30 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, at 7:26 a.m. Eastern time.

Engineers spent the following weeks switching on instruments, checking pointing and confirming that the spacecraft can hold the stable platform the mission needs. Roman is a NASA-led mission with contributions from the European Space Agency.

A wider window on the universe

Roman is an infrared telescope with a field of view far larger than Hubble's. That combination of depth, area and image quality lets it survey wide patches of sky in a single exposure rather than stitching together many narrow images over months.

The mission will study dark energy by mapping how matter is distributed across cosmic time, and it will find exoplanets through microlensing, a technique that spots the brief brightening caused when a foreground star bends light from a star behind it. Astronomers expect the survey to also produce discoveries that were not part of the plan.

In a statement from the European Space Agency, mission scientists noted that whenever astronomy opens a new window on the universe, history shows some of the most important discoveries are the ones nobody anticipated.

What comes next

The telescope now enters commissioning, a phase that typically takes several months. Teams will calibrate detectors, test observing modes and prepare the data pipeline that will process the enormous volume of images the survey produces.

NASA has pointed to Roman as evidence that it can still deliver flagship science missions on schedule and within budget, at a time when the agency faces pressure on several other programs. The mission was previously committed to launch no later than May 2027, and the agency moved the date forward after assembly finished in late 2025.

Once commissioning ends, the telescope will begin a survey designed to run for years, returning data that astronomers will mine long after the mission's first images are released.
