It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and the virus can linger in a room for up to two hours after that person leaves.
Outbreak spreads concern
The deaths come amid an outbreak that has grown across several states. Public health experts have warned for months that slipping vaccination rates leave communities exposed. Measles can cause pneumonia, brain swelling, and permanent hearing loss. Young children, pregnant women, and people with weak immune systems face the highest risk. Doctors said the two deaths are a reminder that measles is not a mild childhood illness.
Officials urge vaccination
Health officials in Pennsylvania are working to trace contacts and contain the outbreak. They urged families to check vaccination records and get the MMR shot if needed. The vaccine is safe, effective, and widely available, they said. Two doses protect more than 97 percent of people for life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also issued guidance for schools and childcare centers.
Officials said the best defense is high vaccination coverage, which protects not only the vaccinated but also people who cannot get the shot for medical reasons. Nationwide, measles cases this year have already surpassed the total for all of last year, according to federal data. Many of the cases are linked to travelers returning from countries with ongoing outbreaks. Health experts say global travel makes measles a continuing threat even in places where the disease was once eliminated.
