Big Tech builds its own chips
Cloud providers are designing their own AI processors to cut costs and improve performance. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have all announced custom silicon in recent years. That trend threatens Nvidia's dominance in AI computing.
By teaming with MediaTek, Nvidia gains a partner with deep experience in ARM-based designs and low-power chips. That could help Nvidia compete in edge AI, robotics, and other areas where GPUs are too large or too power-hungry for the job.
What the deal means
The investment also strengthens ties between the US chip giant and Taiwan's semiconductor industry. MediaTek designs chips but does not run its own factories. Manufacturing is handled by partners such as TSMC, which also makes Nvidia's GPUs.
Nvidia has not said exactly how the two companies will work together. Analysts expect joint AI chip projects in the coming years. The deal shows that the AI hardware race is moving beyond GPUs, as companies fight for every part of the chip supply chain.
