Nvidia has confirmed it will acquire Hugging Face, the platform that hosts roughly three million AI models, for $12.93 billion. The deal is one of the largest in the chipmaker's history.
Hugging Face became the default place where developers publish, compare and download open models. Owning it moves Nvidia beyond chips and into the layer where models are stored, distributed and tested.
The platform stays open
Nvidia said Hugging Face will remain an open-source platform and keep hosting models from many companies, including competitors of the chipmaker. That promise matters to the developers who built the community in the first place, because a closed hub would push them elsewhere.
Analysts described the purchase as Nvidia's move toward an AI operating system, not just the accelerator cards that train and run large models. The company already sells networking gear, server systems and software on top of its chips.
Vacuum and hardware supply chains in focus
The deal arrives as spending on AI hardware keeps climbing. Microsoft plans to expand data-center capacity to about 38 gigawatts by 2032, and Nvidia has begun showing its next generation of AI PCs built around a new superchip. Every step in that chain, from wafer growth to etching and packaging, depends on equipment that holds a stable vacuum while parts move inside the chamber.
Model hubs and chip fabs are different businesses, but both reward scale. Nvidia now sits in the middle of a software ecosystem that generates demand for the hardware it sells.
What developers should watch
The main questions are pricing, licensing and whether model pages keep their neutrality. Nvidia has not published detailed terms. Regulators in the United States and Europe are expected to review the transaction before it closes.
