King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89. The palace said he passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. local time on Friday, August 28. He had been in hospital since August 17 with a bacterial infection in his blood.
A reign that reshaped the monarchy
Harald took the throne in 1991 and reigned for 35 years. He was Europe's oldest reigning monarch at the time of his death. Observers describe him as a reformer who modernized the Norwegian monarchy and made it more open and accessible. He was known for his down-to-earth manner and was often called the "People's king," a title his father, King Olav V, also carried.
One of the defining moments of his life came in 1968, when he married Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner. The match broke with royal tradition and sparked debate at the time. A childhood shaped by war

A royal family under strain
The final years of his reign were clouded by family troubles. Crown Princess Mette-Marit faced scrutiny over her past association with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a relationship for which she has apologized.
