Core stage moves toward final assembly
The massive core stage section -- standing taller than a 15-story building -- was transported from NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility to the Pegasus barge for the journey to Florida. Once at Kennedy Space Center, the stage will be outfitted with avionics and propulsion systems before being stacked with the solid rocket boosters. The RS-25 engines, which have undergone testing at Stennis, will be mated to the engine section in the coming weeks.
Artemis III timeline firms up
NASA officials say Artemis III remains on track for a 2027 launch window. The mission will send astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft on a lunar landing trajectory, marking the first crewed moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. Unlike Artemis II, which will test systems in lunar orbit, Artemis III will attempt an actual descent to the lunar south pole, where scientists believe water ice may be present.
Commercial lander integration ahead
The mission architecture requires Orion to rendezvous and dock with a commercial lunar lander in lunar orbit before descending to the surface. SpaceX's Starship variant, selected as the Human Landing System, continues developmental testing. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson called the rollout a 'concrete step' toward establishing a permanent presence on the moon.
