Elon Musk puts $276 million into the midterm fight for the Senate

The largest checks of the cycle

Elon Musk has quietly become the biggest known donor of the 2026 midterm elections, putting $276 million into an effort to keep Republicans in control of the Senate, according to reporting by The New York Times. The sums rank among the largest political donations by a single individual in American history.

The money has moved through political organizations rather than directly to candidates. That structure lets Musk fund advertising, turnout operations and research without appearing on every campaign's books, and it has reshaped how both parties plan their final weeks of spending.

A firewall around the Senate

Republicans are defending a narrow Senate majority in a year when the economy has been uneven. Employers added only 29,000 jobs in September, wage growth again lagged inflation, and mortgage rates touched their highest level since 2023. Those numbers have kept Democratic hopes alive in states that usually lean Republican.

Musk's spending is aimed at the Senate map rather than the House, where both parties are fighting over a smaller number of competitive districts. A single Senate seat can decide which party holds committee chairs and the confirmation calendar, giving a small number of races outsized weight.

What donors want

Musk's political giving has grown since 2022, when he began backing Republican candidates. In 2025 he put $19 million into a Wisconsin Supreme Court race. His business interests span electric vehicles, satellite internet, space launch and artificial intelligence, all of which face regulation in Washington.

Campaign finance watchdogs say the concentration of money in a handful of races makes it harder for voters to see who is paying for the ads they see. Both parties expect the totals to keep rising before Election Day in November.
