Micron pledges $10 billion to new US memory research hub for the AI era

A decade of research spending

Micron Technology has unveiled Micron Research Labs, a new U.S. research organization backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade. The hub will be headquartered in Boise, Idaho, where the memory-chip maker expects to break ground on a flagship campus in 2027. The facility is designed to host hundreds of researchers.

The announcement came Thursday, and Micron shares moved higher on the news. The stock remains up roughly 234% year to date, though recent gains have slowed amid questions about the durability of AI spending and competition from SK Hynix.

Why memory matters for AI

The research will focus on advanced memory technologies, memory and computing architectures, chip packaging and future semiconductor manufacturing. Micron argues that advances in memory are essential to making future AI systems more scalable and energy efficient. AI accelerators and larger models are putting more pressure on memory bandwidth, capacity, power consumption and packaging.

'The decisions we make today will determine who leads the AI economy of tomorrow, and America's AI future will be built on American-made memory,' said Sanjay Mehrotra, chairman, president and CEO of Micron. 'With a planned $10 billion investment in Micron Research Labs, we are looking around the corner to the memory and compute systems the future will demand.'

A wider U.S. chip push

The $10 billion commitment is separate from Micron's previously announced plans to invest more than $250 billion in U.S. manufacturing and research and development through 2035. The company says those plans will support more than 90,000 American jobs.

Micron also plans to fund university partnerships, satellite laboratories and collaborations across the semiconductor industry. The move gives memory research a dedicated U.S. hub at a time when governments and chipmakers are focused on building domestic capabilities. Other companies are making similar bets. Applied Materials, for example, is preparing its $5 billion EPIC Center in Silicon Valley for collaboration on next-generation process technologies.
