A derby short on quality, high on noise
Manchester United drew 1-1 at Leeds United on Sunday, leaving Michael Carrick's team without a Premier League win since August. Bryan Mbeumo put the visitors ahead, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised for Leeds at Elland Road.
The match was frantic rather than fluent. Elland Road was loud from kick-off, the challenges came early, and neither side managed long spells of control. Ethan Ampadu captained Leeds on his 100th appearance for the club.
Martinez plays after apologising
Lisandro Martinez kept his place in Carrick's starting line-up after apologising for a midweek outburst aimed at the club's hierarchy. The defender had criticised a lack of investment following a 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, comments that added to the pressure on the manager.
Carrick said before the game that the matter was closed and that his squad had moved on. He also had to adjust for absent players, describing some as close to a return but not close enough.
What the result means
United have won once in seven league games this season and stayed in the bottom half of the table. Leeds, who lost their first match of the campaign to Arsenal before this round, remain comfortably above them and had been chasing a first home win over United in 24 years.
Carrick focused on the response of his players, saying the draw was a step in the right direction and that his team had come out with more confidence in the second half. Leeds manager Daniel Farke was quieter afterwards, with his side having created enough to win.
The table shows the gap plainly. Manchester City have won all seven of their matches, Brighton have 16 points and Arsenal 15 from six games, while Leeds sit on 10 points and United on seven.
United's next fixtures leave little room to settle. Carrick needs results rather than encouraging draws, and the club's owners face a decision if the winless run in the league stretches deeper into the autumn.
