Millions gather in Tehran for funeral procession
Iran on Saturday began a dayslong funeral for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28. Hundreds of thousands of mourners packed the Grand Mosalla prayer ground in Tehran, with many beating their chests in sorrow before the flag-draped glass case containing his coffin. Foreign dignitaries from more than 100 countries attend
Representatives from China, Russia, Pakistan and dozens of other nations arrived in Tehran to pay respects. China sent its first senior official to Iran since the war began. Iranian authorities imposed tight security, with military commanders warning the U.S. and Israel against any attack during the ceremonies. The funeral route included processions through central Tehran before the body is moved to its burial site.
Iran's leadership succession remains uncertain
The funeral comes at a delicate time for Iran's political and religious leadership. Khamenei's death has triggered a succession process that remains ongoing, with various factions within the Islamic Republic competing for influence.
