A new direction for the chip maker
Groq has raised $350 million to fuel a pivot from selling AI chips to operating its own neocloud services. The company, known for its fast language processing units, plans to expand the cloud platform where customers run models on Groq hardware.
The funding round comes as demand for AI compute outpaces supply. Groq says its chips run large language models at speeds that beat traditional GPU systems. The company wants to capture more of that value by selling compute time directly rather than just hardware.
What is a neocloud
Neoclouds are cloud providers built around specialized AI hardware instead of general-purpose servers. They offer developers access to high-performance chips without buying machines themselves. Groq joins a crowded field that includes CoreWeave, Lambda and Together AI, all racing to serve AI startups and enterprises.
The shift is a bet that software and services will drive revenue better than chip sales alone. Groq will keep designing processors but will put more resources into data centers, networking and developer tools. The company said it already runs some of the fastest inference speeds in the industry.
Competition heats up
Groq faces pressure from Nvidia, which dominates the AI accelerator market, and from rivals offering similar speed advantages. The company's LPU architecture is designed for inference rather than training, a niche that is growing as deployed AI applications multiply.
Investors backing the round include existing supporters and new funds focused on AI infrastructure. Groq said the money will fund new data center capacity and expand its team. The company declined to disclose its valuation.
