Groq, the AI chip company known for its fast inference processors, has raised $350 million to pivot from selling chips to running a neocloud. A neocloud is a cloud service that leases AI computing power to startups and enterprises. Groq will now operate its own data centers and rent out time on its hardware.

The company's chips are built to run large language models at very high speed while using less power than many rivals. Customers such as developers of AI assistants have used Groq hardware to cut response times from seconds to milliseconds.

Why the pivot

Hardware makers are finding that selling chips is only part of the value. The bigger money is in the cloud services that run the chips. Groq's move follows similar steps by other AI hardware firms that now offer managed inference services.

The neocloud market is growing fast because demand for AI compute still outpaces supply. Big cloud providers have long waiting lists for graphics processors, and startups need alternatives. Groq says its architecture can serve that demand at a lower cost per token.

Groq says the new capital will expand its data center footprint in North America and Europe. The company also plans to hire more engineers and grow its sales team. The funding round comes at a time when investors are pouring money into AI infrastructure despite worries about a bubble.
