The Trump Administration has announced more than $5 billion in federal commitments to expand the Genesis Mission, a national initiative aimed at leveraging artificial intelligence to transform scientific discovery. White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios unveiled the funding alongside new mission-driven National Science and Technology Challenges spanning healthcare, energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, and national security.
Originally launched at the Department of Energy, the Genesis Mission has grown into a whole-of-government effort involving more than 15 federal agencies. These agencies will contribute research awards, funding opportunities, specialized scientific datasets, and research facilities through the American Science and Security Platform, a shared infrastructure connecting researchers with data, computing power, and AI tools.
"America's greatest scientific achievements have been born of national mobilizations paired with the construction of new institutions," said Director Kratsios. "The Genesis Mission is the next chapter in that tradition, as we work together to harness AI for scientific discovery at a scale no one else on the planet can match." The initiative has already selected 278 projects from a competitive application process, demonstrating strong demand across the scientific community.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy said the initiative would "mobilize the nation's best researchers to uncover the root causes of chronic disease, accelerate lifesaving breakthroughs, and help Make America Healthy Again." The Genesis Mission also aims to double America's R&D output and translate scientific breakthroughs into practical benefits for the American people across medicine, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and climate resilience.
