Blaze spreads rapidly in strong winds
The wildfire erupted Sunday evening in the Pyrenees region near Perpignan and expanded rapidly due to strong winds and dry conditions. French authorities evacuated residents from two dozen communities, including three campsites. Two firefighters sustained injuries battling the flames. Government spokeswoman Maud Bregeon said the country likely needs additional resources for wildfire fighting and that a budget increase is under consideration.
Europe's summer of heat continues
The French fire follows weeks of extreme temperatures across Western Europe. France, Spain, and Portugal have all experienced record-breaking heat since May. Scientists at the Copernicus Climate Change Service said June 2026 was the hottest June on record for Western Europe. The heat waves have been linked to a persistent high-pressure system that has trapped warm air over the continent, with climate change increasing both the intensity and frequency of such events.
Broader fire season outlook
Fire officials warn that the wildfire season is far from over. Portugal activated its civil protection mechanism after dozens of smaller fires broke out across the country. In Spain, authorities in Catalonia and Aragon remain on high alert. The EU has prepositioned firefighting aircraft in southern member states for the summer, but officials say the scale of this year's fires is testing the limits of the bloc's emergency response capacity.
