Astronomers detect first atmosphere on a rocky planet in the habitable zone

Astronomers have achieved a milestone in the search for life beyond Earth: the first detection of an atmosphere on a rocky, temperate planet orbiting in the habitable zone of another star.

The discovery, led by researchers at the Center for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian, was announced on July 21 and has been hailed as the strongest evidence yet for an exoplanet capable of supporting alien life. The planet is slightly larger than Earth and orbits a red dwarf star, sitting at just the right distance where liquid water could exist on its surface.

A decade-long search

For years, astronomers have detected atmospheres on gas giants and Neptune-like worlds, but rocky planets in the habitable zone have remained out of reach. Their smaller size and thinner atmospheres make them much harder to study. Using advanced spectroscopy techniques with the James Webb Space Telescope, the team was able to parse the faint light passing through the planet's atmosphere as it transited its star.

The data revealed clear spectral signatures indicating the presence of an atmosphere, though its exact chemical composition remains under analysis. Early results suggest it may contain water vapor and carbon dioxide, two ingredients considered key for habitability.

What this means for the search for life

The discovery opens a new chapter in exoplanet science. Scientists can now begin to study the atmospheres of Earth-like worlds in systems that were previously considered too challenging. 'We have crossed a threshold,' said one researcher involved in the project. 'This is no longer about whether we can detect atmospheres on rocky worlds. It is about what those atmospheres contain.'

The next step will be to search for biosignature gases such as oxygen and methane, which could indicate biological activity. Several more promising candidates in the habitable zones of nearby stars are already scheduled for Webb observations in the coming months.
