Europe's spring heat dome shatters May temperature records across UK, France and Spain

Unprecedented spring heat grips Europe

Western Europe is experiencing a heat dome that has shattered May temperature records. The UK recorded its hottest May day ever, with temperatures exceeding 35°C in parts of the country. France also set a new May national record. Spain and Italy issued heat alerts and restricted outdoor work as temperatures soared.

The heat wave arrived weeks earlier than typical summer heat waves, catching many cities off guard. Schools in parts of France sent students home early. Hospitals reported an increase in heat-related emergency visits. At least seven heat-related deaths have been confirmed in France.

Climate change fingerprints everywhere

Dr. Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London, said the event has 'the fingerprints of climate change all over it.' Her team's analysis found that climate change made the heat wave at least five times more likely and pushed temperatures about 2-3°C higher than they would have been in a world without human-caused warming.

'The climate we are living in today is simply not the one we grew up with, and our buildings and infrastructure are woefully unprepared for what's next,' she warned. Scientists say Europe needs to adapt its cities, homes, and health systems to handle extreme heat earlier in the year.

What this means for summer

Meteorologists warn that if May is breaking records, the summer months could be even worse. The heat dome is expected to persist for several more days before breaking down. European emergency services are on high alert, and several countries have opened cooling centers in public buildings. The event adds urgency to climate adaptation efforts across the continent.
