Elon Musk, the world's richest person, has authorized his political action committee to spend up to $120 million to support Republican candidates in the upcoming midterm elections, The New York Times reported Thursday.
America PAC, Musk's super PAC, plans to deploy $100 million to $120 million on field operations in at least eight states, focusing on Senate races and several competitive House contests. The group told the Times it would be 'active in battleground Senate and House races' and conduct what it called a historic get-out-the-vote operation for the 2026 midterms.
A return to GOP politics
The spending blitz comes a year after Musk had a public falling out with President Donald Trump over spending legislation. Musk threatened to start a third party and even posted on X that Trump was 'in the Epstein files.' Since then, the two have mended fences, and Musk has been in talks with Trump's team about how he can best help Republican candidates in November.
America PAC spent more than $260 million to help elect Trump in 2024. The new investment signals that Musk, despite his volatile relationship with the Republican establishment, remains one of the party's most powerful financial backers.
What the money will buy
According to Federal Election Commission filings, America PAC's spending has historically focused on voter outreach, legal services, and advertising. Between February 2025 and March 2026, the PAC paid $2.3 million to Lex Politica, a Texas-based political law firm co-founded by a former America PAC attorney.
Democrats criticized the move, pointing to Musk's past statements about staying out of politics. The spending could reshape the landscape in several battleground states where Senate races are expected to be tight.
