Humanity exhausted Earth's entire ecological budget for 2026 on July 30, according to the Global Footprint Network, meaning the world has been living on ecological credit for more than five months of the year. The date marks the highest level of global overshoot ever recorded.

Living on 1.73 planets

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity's demand for ecological resources and services exceeds what Earth can regenerate in a full year. This year, humans are using nature 73 percent faster than the planet's ecosystems can regenerate — the equivalent of consuming 1.73 Earths.

The date was announced on June 5, World Environment Day. The shift from July 24 in 2025 to July 30 in 2026 reflects updated scientific data on the ocean's ability to absorb carbon, not a real reduction in humanity's footprint. Actual human ecological demand grew over the past year.

What overshoot means

After Earth Overshoot Day, humanity draws down local resource stocks and accumulates carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The overshoot deepens climate breakdown, drives biodiversity loss, and widens global inequality, the network said.

"From that point on, we begin consuming on ecological credit," the organization said. Climate change, extreme weather events and species loss are all impacts of operating beyond the planet's budget.

Moving the date

The Global Footprint Network argues that solutions to move Earth Overshoot Day back already exist. The circular economy — reusing materials instead of extracting new ones — is one of the most practical responses available, the group said. Its #MoveTheDate campaign tracks projects that could bring human activity back into balance with Earth's budget.

The calculation is based on the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts, which use United Nations data. The network notes the date is an approximation, but it gives a clear picture of how much larger human demand is than the planet's ability to regenerate.
