A supply chain under pressure

Memory is a weaker link. High-bandwidth memory, a key part of AI systems, is dominated by a few suppliers, and Chinese firms are still years behind. Several state-backed projects are trying to close that gap with new production lines.

The hard limits ahead

China still depends on imported tools for chipmaking. Dutch and Japanese lithography machines remain essential, and US allies have joined export limits on the most advanced gear. Without those tools, Chinese factories cannot make the smallest, fastest chips.

Analysts say China's best processors trail US designs by several years. Closing that gap will take a decade or more of sustained investment, and export controls keep tightening in the meantime. Washington shows no sign of easing the pressure.

The outcome of this race will shape the global technology order. If China closes the gap, it will break the link between AI progress and American hardware. If not, US dominance in AI will last well into the 2030s. For now, both sides are spending heavily and betting on different futures.
