History at BC Place

Jonathan David scored three goals and Canada won its first men's World Cup match in program history, routing Qatar 6-0 on Thursday at BC Place in Vancouver. The result puts Canada on four points from two matches, all but securing a spot in the knockout round. David became the first player to score a World Cup hat trick on home soil since England's Geoff Hurst in 1966.

Nine-man Qatar overwhelmed

Qatar was reduced to nine players in a chaotic match. Homan Ahmed was sent off in the first half for a challenge on Tajon Buchanan. Early in the second half, Assim Madibo received a straight red for a tackle on Ismael Kone, who was stretchered off with a broken left leg. Nathan Saliba added a free-kick goal, and an own goal from Mohamed Manai added to Qatar's misery before David completed his hat trick in stoppage time.

Canada's World Cup journey continues

Canada opened the tournament with a draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina, with Cyle Larin scoring. Alphonso Davies scored four years ago in a loss to Croatia in Qatar—Canada's only goal in that tournament. Now co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, Canada is positioned to advance past the group stage for the first time. David joins Argentina's Lionel Messi as the only players with three goals in a match in this year's tournament.
