Bronx shooting by an ICE agent sets off a new fight over federal raids in New York

What happened in Marble Hill

New York City police said an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man during an arrest on Thursday afternoon. The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. in Marble Hill, a neighbourhood in the Bronx. The man was taken to a hospital. Local media reported that he is 28 years old and from the Dominican Republic. A five-year-old child was in the vehicle and was not injured.

Federal officials said the man drove toward the agents. Mayor Zohran Mamdani gave a different account. He said early reports showed that agents surrounded the man and the child before firing several rounds. He added that the agents wore plain clothes and were hard to identify.

City hall and the White House trade blame

Mamdani called the shooting an outrage and asked President Donald Trump and the Homeland Security Secretary to pull ICE out of the city. “This city wants ICE out,” he said. Protesters gathered near the scene as details emerged.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin spoke at ICE headquarters in Washington the next day. He defended the agency and criticised cities that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The administration has expanded ICE operations in major cities this year, and New York has pushed back at every step.

A fight that lands in the midterms

The dispute arrives in the middle of a heated midterm season. Democrats have made federal enforcement tactics a campaign theme. The Cook Political Report moved 18 House races toward the Democrats this week, citing shifting district data. Trump has been travelling through states such as New York, trying to hold both chambers of Congress.

Immigration enforcement is now one of the sharpest dividing lines in those races. Both parties expect the issue to drive turnout in November.

The administration has scaled up immigration raids in major cities to detain and deport people who are in the country illegally, and New York has been one of the busiest targets.
