The Milwaukee Brewers made history on Tuesday night. They beat the Seattle Mariners 22-0 at American Family Field, matching the largest shutout victory in Major League Baseball since 1888.
A night of firsts
The Brewers matched their franchise record for runs in a game. The last time they scored 22 was a 22-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in August 1992, when Robin Yount and Paul Molitor were still teammates.
The game also produced an MLB first. No team had ever scored 20 or more runs, thrown a 10-inning shutout, and played errorless baseball in the same game. The Brewers did all three.
For the Mariners, the night set a different kind of record. It was the worst loss in the franchise's 50-season history.
An avalanche in the late innings
Jake Bauers scored the first run of the night, scratching and clawing his way home in the early innings. Then the floodgates opened. Milwaukee scored 21 of its 22 runs over the final four innings, batting around against a series of Seattle relievers.
Kyle Harrison kept the Mariners off the board for five innings, and the bullpen carried the shutout the rest of the way. The offense finished with 22 hits.
Historic company
The 22-0 score ties the largest margin of victory in a shutout since the modern era began in 1901. Only two other teams had done it: the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 22-0 at Wrigley Field in 1975, and the Cleveland Indians beat the New York Yankees 22-0 in 2004.
The win pushed Milwaukee 30 games over .500 and 20 games over .500 at home. It also gave the Brewers a statement win in a season in which they have played like one of the best teams in baseball.
