Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI assistant, is in early talks with investors to raise at least 30 billion dollars in fresh financing at a valuation of more than 900 billion, according to people familiar with the matter. If completed, the round would make Anthropic the most valuable AI company in the world, surpassing OpenAI's reported 852 billion post-money valuation from March.
The New York Times reported that the valuation could reach as high as 950 billion, which would represent a 2.5-times jump from the company's 380 billion valuation just three months ago. The round is expected to close as soon as the end of May, though no term sheet has been signed and the talks could still fall apart.
The fundraising reflects the explosive growth of the AI sector. Anthropic's annualized revenue surged from 1 billion in December 2024 to 30 billion by the end of March 2026. CEO Dario Amodei recently said the company could grow 80 times as big this year. Last month, Anthropic released its Mythos model, which the company described as so strong at identifying security vulnerabilities that it could create a cybersecurity reckoning.
OpenAI has publicly disputed Anthropic's revenue figures, arguing that the 30 billion ARR uses gross-revenue accounting rather than net revenue. The debate highlights growing scrutiny over how AI companies report financial performance amid record-breaking fundraising. In the first quarter of 2026, AI companies raised 297 billion, with four of the five largest deals ever recorded occurring during this period.
Defense technology company Anduril also hit a 61 billion valuation in its latest funding round, and Nvidia committed 40 billion to equity deals in AI this year, showing that investor enthusiasm for the sector shows no sign of cooling.
