Andreeva dominates in straight sets

Mirra Andreeva transformed from a talented teenager into a Grand Slam champion on Court Philippe-Chatrier on Saturday, June 6. The 19-year-old world No. 8 defeated qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 to win the French Open women's singles title. Andreeva is the youngest champion in Paris since Monica Seles secured her third consecutive Roland-Garros title in 1992 at age 18.

Andreeva started slowly, looking nervous in the first 20 minutes of her first Grand Slam final. But she found her rhythm and dominated from the middle of the first set onward, breaking Chwalinska's serve multiple times.

A rapid rise through the ranks

Andreeva began her Grand Slam journey at Roland-Garros in 2023, where she entered as a qualifier and made a surprise run to the semifinals. Now, just two years later, she has lifted the Coupe Suzanne-Lenglen. She is coached by former world No. 2 and Roland-Garros 2000 runner-up Conchita Martinez, and has surpassed Martinez by one step by winning the title.

The victory caps a remarkable rise for the young Russian player, who has been described as one of the most promising talents in women's tennis.

Chwalinska's fairytale run ends

Maja Chwalinska entered the tournament as a qualifier and became the story of the French Open with her unexpected run to the final. The Polish player defeated several higher-ranked opponents on her way to the championship match. After the match, Chwalinska said the tournament was the reward for 18 years of patience and perseverance.

In the men's final, Flavio Cobolli was set to face Alexander Zverev. The women's doubles final also took place during the tournament's final weekend at Roland-Garros.
