A $50 billion bet on ChatGPT's future

Amazon on Friday unveiled a strategic partnership with OpenAI that includes an investment of up to $50 billion, with $15 billion upfront and $35 billion more contingent on meeting certain conditions. The deal is part of a broader $110 billion funding round that also includes SoftBank and NVIDIA, bringing OpenAI's pre-money valuation to $730 billion. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy wrote on LinkedIn that he expects OpenAI to be 'one of the big winners in AI.'

Trainium chips and AWS deepen ties

Under the partnership, OpenAI will commit to using 2 gigawatts of Amazon's custom Trainium AI chips to support its new enterprise platform, Frontier, and other computing needs. The arrangement also makes OpenAI models available to Amazon engineers for developing consumer products. The deal could ease Wall Street concerns about Amazon's $200 billion capex spending by providing a clear revenue channel for its chip investments.

Reshaping the AI power map

Analysts at William Blair called the deal a clear positive for AWS, estimating the added $100 billion in OpenAI usage over eight years could contribute roughly $17 billion annually—about 11% of AWS's expected 2026 revenue. The partnership marks a shift in the AI landscape as cloud providers and AI labs form increasingly tight financial and technical bonds.
