Scientists find hidden chemical signature of life and a new form of magnetism

Scientists may have found a powerful new way to hunt for alien life, not by searching for specific molecules, but by looking for hidden patterns in how those molecules are organized. Research published in Nature Astronomy shows that living systems leave behind a kind of chemical fingerprint in the statistical distribution of amino acids and fatty acids, one that consistently differs from nonliving chemistry.

The researchers discovered that amino acids found in living systems tend to be both more varied and more evenly distributed than amino acids formed through nonbiological processes. This statistical signature could give astronomers a new tool for detecting life on other planets without needing to identify specific biomolecules.

In physics, the May 2026 issue of Scientific American features a cover story on altermagnets, a third fundamental form of magnetism that was experimentally confirmed in late 2024. Altermagnets combine the speed of antiferromagnets, which operate at terahertz frequencies a thousand times faster than conventional magnets, with the strong detectable signals of ferromagnets.

The discovery could change computing by enabling data storage at the fastest speeds allowed by nature. Current hard drives use ferromagnets limited to gigahertz speeds, creating a bottleneck with terahertz optical communication networks. Altermagnets could bridge this gap, reducing the massive energy consumption of global data centers that now exceeds that of many medium-sized countries.

Also in the Scientific American May issue, new evidence indicates that inflammation, rather than cholesterol alone, may be the true cause of cardiovascular disease, and that inexpensive drugs like colchicine could offer new treatments for heart conditions.
