German AI firm Aleph Alpha releases open-weight model Kolibri

A model built for European users

Aleph Alpha, a German AI company based in Heidelberg, has released a large language model called Kolibri. The model handles German and English and is built on a mixture-of-experts design. That means it sends each request to only part of its network, which cuts the computing power needed to answer.

The company published the model weights on Hugging Face under the Apache 2.0 licence. Organisations can download Kolibri and run it themselves, without sending data to an outside provider.

Why the weights matter

Most leading AI models are closed. Users can call them through an API but cannot inspect or host them. Open weights change that. Public agencies, banks and factories can keep sensitive records inside their own networks and tune the model for their own work.

Aleph Alpha targets exactly those customers. It sells to European governments, industry and defence organisations, where rules on data protection and the EU AI Act shape what tools can be used. The company says its models must stay auditable, and it links each release to a compliance report.

Sovereign AI and the hardware behind it

The release fits a wider push for what policymakers call sovereign AI. Governments want models trained and hosted on domestic systems, which raises demand for data centre capacity and the chips inside it. Europe still buys most of its advanced AI processors from abroad, and several countries now fund local chip and supercomputer projects to close that gap.

Aleph Alpha has already worked with hardware partners to build systems for German institutions. Running a model like Kolibri in-house still requires servers, power and cooling, so the software release may pull more spending toward European data centres.
