Tencent raises $5.7 billion as investors look past AI spending fears

Nearly four times oversubscribed

Tencent Holdings raised about $5.7 billion on Tuesday through US dollar and offshore yuan bonds, after investor orders came in at close to four times the amount the company had targeted.

The Chinese technology group had been looking to raise at least $4.5 billion across four tranches. Demand held up even as worry about the scale of global AI spending pushed technology shares lower earlier in the week, with memory and chip makers leading the decline.

Capital spending more than doubled

Tencent plans to use the proceeds for general corporate purposes. The company has been building AI infrastructure at speed: capital spending more than doubled to 96.3 billion yuan in the first half of 2026 from 45.9 billion yuan a year earlier. Its June bond sale of about $4.66 billion was its largest offering since 2020.

Tencent is not alone. Goldman Sachs credit strategists say AI-related debt issuance worldwide has passed $575 billion so far in 2026. SoftBank's recent deal, worth the equivalent of $11.1 billion, ranked among the biggest corporate junk-bond transactions on record.

Investors weigh the bill

The question for bond buyers is whether revenue from AI products will arrive before the interest payments do. Data center construction, power contracts and chip orders are front-loaded costs, while many AI services are still priced below what it costs to run them.

So far, lenders are still willing to fund the buildout. Tencent's order book suggests large technology borrowers with steady cash flows can raise money cheaply, even in a week when equity investors were trimming exposure to the same theme.
