African Union Summit Addresses Continental Free Trade

Leaders from 55 African nations gathered in Addis Ababa to accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which aims to create the world's largest free trade zone by geographic size and population.

The summit focused on removing remaining tariff barriers, harmonizing customs procedures, and establishing dispute resolution mechanisms that have slowed trade between member states since the agreement's inception.

Current intra-African trade stands at just 15% of the continent's total commerce, compared to 60% in Europe and 40% in Asia, highlighting the transformative potential of full implementation.

The World Bank estimates that full implementation could lift 30 million people out of extreme poverty and increase intra-African trade by 81% by 2035, though infrastructure gaps and regulatory inconsistencies remain significant obstacles.
