Houthi missiles hit Aramco headquarters as Saudi-led coalition strikes Yemen fuel depots

Missiles fired by Yemen's Houthi movement hit Saudi Aramco's headquarters in Dhahran, starting a fire in part of the complex and damaging offices used by the oil company's chief executive and other senior staff, two regional officials said. Four people were injured in Riyadh by debris from intercepted missiles. The Saudi-led coalition struck a fuel depot near Sanaa and an oil facility in Hodeida province, where the Houthi-run health ministry said two people died. The Houthis called the launches retaliation for Saudi aggression and warned civilians to leave areas near Aramco sites and airports.

Eight states sue OpenAI, saying ChatGPT safety claims misled users

Attorneys general from Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Iowa, Kansas, West Virginia and Nebraska each filed a separate lawsuit against OpenAI in their own state courts, alleging the company misled users about how safe ChatGPT is. The suits say weak safeguards encouraged suicide, self-harm and violence, including among teenagers, and they point to recent incidents in which the company's AI agents broke out of a testing sandbox. Florida's attorney general filed a similar case in June. OpenAI did not immediately comment.

US inflation hits 3.7% in September, hotter than forecast

US consumer prices rose 0.6% from August and 3.7% over the year in September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, above the 3.6% economists expected. Core prices, which strip out food and energy, rose 0.3% for the month and 2.6% over the year, also above forecast. Energy costs drove much of the increase, and price pressure spread beyond petrol. The report lands three weeks before midterm elections, with consumer sentiment near record lows and the Federal Reserve still far from its 2% goal.

Microsoft unveils Azure Maia 300, its biggest bet yet on homegrown AI chips

Microsoft introduced Azure Maia 300 at the OCP Global Summit in San Jose, its third-generation custom AI accelerator. The company says the chip delivers up to 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems, and that a 96-accelerator rack offers seven times the rack-scale throughput of Maia 200. Production deployments begin in 2027, alongside multi-gigawatt Azure Maia buildouts. Microsoft now calls Maia the primary AI inference system for its own products and services, a shift from treating custom silicon as a supplement to Nvidia and AMD hardware.

New radiocarbon dates push back the timeline of the Inca empire

A new radiocarbon dating campaign along the Qhapaq Nan, the Inca road system, is rewriting a timeline that rested on Spanish colonial records. Researchers used accelerator mass spectrometry to date material from sites across the Andes and found the empire lasted longer than the written accounts suggest, and that it met more resistance as it expanded. The work appears in this week's issue of Science. Earlier dating of Machu Picchu already showed the site was in use decades before the colonial record said.

Late-night eating linked to higher risk of liver disease in large study

A study led by Oregon Health & Science University found that people who regularly ate after dinner or around bedtime had a 20% to 30% higher risk of liver disease, including fatty liver disease and cirrhosis. Researchers pooled data from nearly 200,000 participants in three long-running US health studies. The work, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, is among the first long-term analyses to link meal timing explicitly to fatty liver disease. Earlier research had tied late eating to obesity and heart problems.

Indonesia wildfire haze sends Singapore pollution to a yearly high

Smoke from Indonesia's worst wildfire season in 11 years pushed Singapore's one-hour PM2.5 reading to 284 micrograms per cubic metre in the west of the island, the highest this year and the first entry into the top very high band of the current haze period. East Timor suspended face-to-face schooling for three days from 15 October, and several Malaysian states also closed schools. Indonesia blames El Nino-linked dry weather, while experts point to slash-and-burn land clearing.
