What are fire clouds

Wildfires can create their own weather. When a blaze burns hot enough, it pushes a column of hot air and smoke high into the sky. Moisture in the air condenses, and the column grows into a massive cloud. Scientists call these pyrocumulonimbus clouds, or fire clouds. They can tower more than ten kilometers high, reaching the stratosphere. Some have triggered lightning, which starts new fires. Others have produced strong winds that spread the flames. Fire clouds are among the most violent weather events on Earth.

A dangerous flight

A team of researchers is preparing to fly an aircraft into one of these storms for the first time. The plane will be fitted with instruments to measure temperature, moisture, smoke particles, and wind. Flying into a fire cloud is dangerous. The updrafts are violent, and visibility drops to almost zero inside the smoke. The team will only fly into moderate clouds, and the aircraft will be ready to turn back at any moment. Pilots and scientists have trained for months to handle the conditions. Every flight will be planned around the latest fire and weather data.

Why it matters

Fire clouds inject enormous amounts of smoke into the upper atmosphere. That smoke can travel thousands of kilometers and affect air quality far from the fire. It can also change how much sunlight reaches the ground, which influences local weather. Climate models do not yet capture these effects well. Data from the flights will help scientists build better forecasts and understand how wildfires interact with the climate. As wildfires grow more intense around the world, the answers are becoming more urgent. This mission is a step toward understanding one of the most extreme weather events on Earth.
